Why Buy a Wooden Toy?

We have all been round the local toy superstore so it is no surprise that the vast majority of children's toys are mass produced from brightly coloured plastic. There is no problem with this - it's cheap and cheerful, light and weathers well. Having said that, it's just not very special is it?

If you are buying a toy for your beloved child or grandchild, sometimes you just want to me it a bit special. If you are looking for something a bit more special, consider a wooden alternative.

Wooden playthings come in all shapes and sizes. They range from educational toys through to wooden bikes and dolls houses. But are there any more advantages to a wooden toy other than just the simple aesthetic pleasure? Here are five advantages of choosing a wooden toy.

  • Durability - Wooden toys are often more durable than plastic. Plastic toys such as little chairs are often quite flimsy - whereas the wooden counterpart is much more sturdy.
  • Safety - you are much less likely to encounter chemicals or toxic materials with a wooden toys.
  • Sanity - Most parents are fully aware of the irritation levels of all the battery operated toys and the infernal racket that accompany them. A lovely wooden dolls house or a rocking horse seems a far gentler option!
  • Environmental benefits - wooden playthings are often made from sustainable wood, so have minimal environmental impact.
  • Developmental benefits - Toys made from wood are more likely to inspire imaginative play, as opposed to high tech toys which are designed to amuse and distract and generally end up over stimulating.
